About CBC

In September 2008, our son CJ was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 9.  Instantly, we found ourselves engaged in a battle we could not have prepared for.  Since then, we have been continually surrounded by families also experiencing this unexpected and often overwhelming diagnosis.  We have experienced personally and witnessed firsthand the devastating effects that this diagnosis has on an entire family.  Isolation, fear, loneliness, frustration and financial burden are all common within these families.

What began as a battle has now become a mission to relieve some of the burden that families face when they have a child with cancer. Children Battling Cancer, Inc. is that mission.  CBC is a non-profit corporation dedicated to bridging the gap between the community and the families batting this disease by raising awareness of the immense struggles families face when a child is diagnosed with cancer while raising support for the families.

Many of these struggles are common among the families while others are unique to the structure of each individual family.   The single parent faces a much different battle than the two parent family.  The family with multiple siblings face challenges that the family without siblings will face. The family with two parents in the workforce at the time of diagnosis will face sudden changes that another family may not. Regardless, the impact of all these burdens can be lessened with encouragement and support.

We believe our personal experience affords us the rare opportunity to raise first hand awareness within the community. As we raise awareness we believe we will in turn be able to enlist the community to come along side these families battling childhood cancer.  As we offer that support we believe we will be able to share the love of Christ with these families through our words, actions and practical help.

Children Battling Cancer, Inc. will serve as that bridge in the gap between the community and the families in desperate need of their support, by bringing the two sides together through fundraising, special events, service days and more.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.  ( 2Cor 1:3-4)

About CJ

After months of intensifying back pain, two ER visits and a denied MRI we still did not know what was wrong with CJ.  We knew he was in pain and we wanted answers.  After a third ER room visit and a referral to specialist we finally had another MRI scheduled.

What began as an outpatient 45 minute MRI turned out to be four hours and an immediate transfer to the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. Within days, CJ was diagnosed with Stage 3 Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma and began chemotherapy.  Those were not words in our vocabulary at the time and certainly not the vocabulary of a 9 year old boy.  We were suddenly engaged in a battle we neither understood nor could we have predicted or prepared for.

Follow CJ 's personal journey from the very first frightening days by reading their family blog where they shares their most intimate feelings and struggles during this battle.

Why the name CBC?

We chose the name Children Battling Cancer (CBC)  for two distinct reasons. One is that through our own experience and what we have witnessed  in the families around us we have come to realize that cancer is just that...a battle. It is a battle that affects the whole family.  It is a battle for survival first and foremost, but within that battle is the battle of surrendering to the treatments, the battle of recovering from the chemotherapy, the battle of remaining positive during difficult circumstances, the battle against fear and depression, the battle of keeping a family unified and together during high levels of stress and anxiety, and the battle of discouragement during the fear of isolation.  Although much of this battle is purely physical, the majority of this battle is truly fought in the heart while on the knees.

The main reason we chose the name was for the acronym C-B-C.  Children who are battling cancer will continually have to have their complete blood counts (CBC's) taken for the entire duration of treatment, often being poked for blood counts  multiples times a week for many years.  These blood counts monitor everything in relation to the cancer including the effects as well as effectiveness of the chemotherapy.  The numbers become of great significance throughout the treatments. This is a huge part of where the battle is fought.
